My fellow brethren in music and good friend, MC HINOMARU, and I got together to create a music video to signify his transition to his next chapter in the music industry. MC HINOMARU had planned to take his music career to the next level and promote out in Japan. We got together the night of his final show in the US to create this montage video.

Like myself alike, MC HINOMARU, is always on the grind and striving for higher goals. We had originally planned to do a full music video, but as always time was against us. Arriving at his final show, we both had no idea what to actually film. With a bit of thought we decided the montage route might be the best of choices.

Prior to filming the video, MC HINOMARU had sent me a variety of new songs of his. After gathering footage from the final live performance, I spent some time listening to HINOMARU’s music closely and decided “BREAK UP” was the right choice. The song itself sends a message of of leaving and returning at the same time. Lyrically its one that we can all relate to in some way or another. The continuous piano loop really elevates the song to the next level, make it feel Japanese NUJABES-esque yet multidimensional.  MC HINOMARU writes

This lyric was deep for me, and I couldn’t write it without tearing up.

I had a great time working with MC HINOMARU, and hope the best for his music career. He’s very talented with tons of ambition.

One Love,
Sonny_B

Official statement from the label here:

We deeply regret the loss of a unique talent and a close friend. Through his soulful music, Nujabes has touched so many people around the world, even beyond his dreams. He was a mysterious character to most as he avoided the public limelight, rarely conducted interviews, so only a few got to know the man behind the signature production. Yet it continued to amaze me how young listeners of all backgrounds learned of his enigmatic name, and expressed support for his music. More »
