The Creative Trap Every Artist Falls Into
The Hardest Part Was Letting Go
One of the hardest parts of being an independent creator isn’t coming up with ideas.
It’s knowing when to stop.
As I was finishing the Weekend music video featuring ayumi melody, I found myself doing what I always seem to do. I’d watch the video, think of one more idea, go back into the edit, and make another small change.
One more transition.
One more shot.
One more little detail.
When you’re the artist, director, editor, producer, and creative director, nobody tells you when the project is finished. That decision is completely up to you.
The day before release, I was still thinking, “Maybe I should add one more thing.”
Good vs. Perfect
Then I was talking with one of my good friends, photographer Ben Gonzalez.
He sent me a message that simply said,
“Perfect is the enemy of good.”
I’ve heard that quote before, but this time it really stuck with me.
I realized something.
The jump from starting to good is huge.
The jump from good to perfect is actually pretty small.
The problem is that once something is already good, you can always find another tiny thing to improve. If you’re not careful, you end up stuck in an endless loop of chasing perfection instead of sharing your work with the world.
Thinking About the Next Project
A while back, another friend asked me to give feedback on one of his projects.
After I shared my ideas, he thanked me and said something that I’ve never forgotten.
“I’m going to use that on the next project.”
At first I thought that was interesting.
Why not go back and improve the current one?
Then I understood.
He wasn’t focused on making one project perfect.
He was focused on becoming better over many projects.
That’s a mindset I’m still learning.
Finally Pressing Publish
The Weekend music video took about a year to create.
As new ideas came to me, the project continued to grow. What started as one idea eventually became a celebration of everything I love about summertime in Japan. The mornings, the festivals, the fireworks, the beaches, and the energy that summer brings.
At some point though, every creator has to let go.
Not because the work is perfect.
But because it’s time for people to finally experience it.
I’m sure I’ll learn new things on the next project.
That’s part of the journey.
Sometimes growth doesn’t come from making one more edit.
Sometimes it comes from simply pressing Publish.

最後に一番難しかったのは「手放すこと」でした。
作品を作る中で、一番難しいことって、アイデアを思いつくことじゃないのかもしれません。
「もう完成」と決めること。
それが意外と一番難しいんです。
今回の「Weekend」のMVもそうでした。
完成したと思って見返すたびに、「ここをもう少し」「あと1カットだけ」「この演出も入れられるかも」と、何度も編集をやり直していました。
自分でアーティストも、監督も、編集もやっていると、「もう十分だよ」と言ってくれる人はいません。
最後に判断するのは自分自身です。
そんな時、写真家の友人が送ってくれた言葉が心に残りました。
“Perfect is the enemy of good.”
完璧を目指し続けると、「良い作品」を世に出すタイミングを失ってしまう。
そんな意味なんだと思います。
スタートから「良い作品」になるまでの成長は本当に大きいです。
でも、そこから「完璧」を目指す変化は意外と小さい。
それなのに、その小さな差を埋めようとして何日も、何週間も使ってしまうことがあります。
以前、別のクリエイターの友人にも印象的なことを言われました。
僕がアドバイスをした時、その場では作品を直さずに、「次の作品で活かすよ」と言ったんです。
その時に、「毎回100点を目指すより、作品を重ねながら成長していくことの方が大切なんだな」と感じました。
僕もまだ勉強中です。
「Weekend」は約1年かけて少しずつ形になりました。
日本の夏の空気、花火、お祭り、海、そして夏ならではの開放感。
そんな雰囲気を感じてもらえたら嬉しいです。
もちろん、「ここを直したい」と思う部分は今でもあります。
でも、どこかで作品を送り出さないと、誰にも届きません。
次の作品では、今回学んだことをまた活かしていこうと思います。
成長って、もう1回編集することだけじゃない。
「公開する」と決めることも、大きな一歩なんだと思います。
